Hierarchical Numerical Cosmology with Hydrodynamics: Methods and Code Tests

چکیده
We describe a two-level hierarchical three-dimensional numerical code designed to simulate the formation of galaxies and other larger scale structures in an expanding universe with Newtonian gravity and radiative cooling. The basis of the hierarchical code is a standard particle-mesh (PM) algorithm used to evolve the dark matter constituents and an ideal nonrelativistic MHD uid solver to evolve the gas components on a cubical Cartesian grid with variable timesteps. Within the parent cube we can construct a smaller subgrid ( xed in space) to resolve ner scale structures, providing a larger dynamical range over standard single grid codes without the enormous demand for memory and execution time. The elds from the parent grid are treated as external elds in the subgrid evolution and are passed down only as boundary

A multidimensional hydrodynamic code for structure evolution in cosmology
A cosmological multidimensional hydrodynamic code is described and tested. This code is based on modern high-resolution shock-capturing techniques. It can make use of a linear or a parabolic cell reconstruction as well as an approximate Riemann solver. The code has been specifically designed for cosmological applications. Two tests including shocks have been considered: the first one is a stand...
متن کاملThree Dimensional Numerical General Relativistic Hydrodynamics I: Formulations, Methods, and Code Tests
This is the first in a series of papers on the construction and validation of a threedimensional code for general relativistic hydrodynamics, and its application to general relativistic astrophysics. This paper studies the consistency and convergence of our general relativistic hydrodynamic treatment and its coupling to the spacetime evolutions described by the full set of Einstein equations wi...
متن کاملBuilding a Cosmological Hydrodynamic Code: Consistency Condition, Moving Mesh Gravity and SLH-PM
Building a self-gravitating hydrodynamic code as a combination of a hydrodynamic solver and a gravity solver is discussed. We show that straightforward combining those two solvers generally leads to a code that does not conserve energy locally, and instead a special Consistency Condition ought to be satisfied. A particular example of combining Softened Lagrangian Hydrodynamics (SLH) with a PM g...
متن کاملAccuracy of Mesh Based Cosmological Hydrocodes: Tests and Corrections
We perform a variety of tests to determine the numerical resolution of the cosmological TVD eulerian code developed by Ryu et al. (1993). Tests include 512 and 256 simulations of a Pk ∝ k −1 spectrum to check for self-similarity and comparison of results with those from higher resolution SPH and grid-based calculations (Frenk et al. 1998). We conclude that in regions where density gradients are...
متن کاملA Three-dimensional Hydrodynamics Code for Modeling Sources of Gravitational Radiation
We have developed a 3-D Eulerian hydrodynamics code to model sources of gravitational radiation. The code is written in cylindrical coordinates (̟, z, φ) and has moving grids in the ̟ and z-directions. We use Newtonian gravity and calculate the gravitational radiation in the quadrupole approximation. This code has been tested on a variety of problems to verify its accuracy and stability, and the ...
